Autoworkers' strikes spread to 38 locations in 20 states Los Angeles Times

They have a lot to show for their efforts thus far, and for at least the next year, an administration in Washington that has supported Americans’ collective bargaining rights like no other administration in 90 years. At the moment, they appear to have the advantage over recalcitrant managements. It’s also true, however, that the nonunion companies’ responses could successfully undermine the UAW’s organizing efforts. Subaru said it would raise pay at its plant in Lafayette, Ind., though it hasn’t said by how much. Please email us your feedback, ideas and comments to uaw.org/questions. Negotiations at Columbia University unstable, organizers say

The record deal at Aramark comes on the heels of a number of major victories for the UAW in recent months. Last fall, UAW members won record contracts at the Big Three automakers after their 44-day Stand-Up Strike. Last week, autoworkers at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, TN, made history by overwhelmingly voting to join the UAW, the first auto plant in the South to unionize in decades. 5,000 workers at Mercedes-Benz in Vance, Ala., will have their vote to join the UAW on May 13 to 17.

“It’s a shame that (CEOs) make those millions off the backs of exploiting workers at poverty wages,” Fain told MSNBC on Sunday. Fain also indirectly referred to CNN’s interview Friday with General Motors CEO Mary Barra, who was asked why her workers shouldn’t receive the same percentage pay raise that she received. A White House official told CNN on Sunday "both senior aide Gene Sperling and Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su are engaging with the parties, as they have for weeks, with the intention of continuing conversations in person early in the week." The historic strike is in its third day. Negotiations between the UAW and the Big Three automakers have been ongoing this weekend and continued into Sunday, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations. In bargaining, the union is pointing to carmakers’ huge recent profits as it seeks wage increases of 36% over four years. Instead of targeting more production plants Friday, the UAW went after centers that distribute parts to car dealer service departments.

UAW Workers in California Stand Up as Strike Expands

Aramark workers will now vote on whether to approve the tentative agreement. In a new video, Mike Booth, UAW Vice President and Director of the GM Department, shares some of the record gains contained in the deal and the strategy behind winning the agreement. UAW Local 2320 – The National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW) represents most people who work in federally funded legal services programs across the U.S., as well as workers in other types of law offices and various human services programs. VIRTUAL – On Friday, April 26 at 10pm ET, UAW President Shawn Fain, alongside the UAW Daimler Truck North America Bargaining Committee, will address Daimler workers and allies on Facebook Live just hours before the contract for the over 7,000 UAW workers expires at midnight. And to the rest of our union, and workers across the South, stay ready to Stand Up and keep winning big.

But they could read the handwriting on the wall from the UAW’s contract settlements. If they didn’t, UAW President Shawn Fain made sure they wouldn’t miss the message. UAW spokesman Brian Rothenberg has indicated that union records would have survived a blaze at the building. When fire ripped through the third floor of Solidarity House, the UAW's headquarters, last year, the blaze left potentially millions of dollars in damage to the Detroit landmark and appeared to be a metaphor for the corruption scandal burning through the union.

Southern California hotel workers ratify new contracts, ending strikes for some

The three have been generous in passing profits on to shareholders through stock buybacks. GM has repurchased more than $3 billion in shares since mid-2022 and issued dividends to shareholders of $397 million last year. Just seven days ago the company declared a quarterly dividend of 9 cents a share, at an estimated cost of $123.5 million. UPS reached a contract agreement with 330,000 Teamster-represented drivers and other package handlers in July, staving off a strike that could have crippled its business and reverberated across the U.S. economy. The contracts are tentative, pending ratification by the members, and the Stellantis and GM contracts haven’t been fully disclosed. But it’s presumed that they follow the Ford deal, which has been published.

Sprinkle and others explained the pay scale at the facility, which picks and distributes parts to dealers across Southern California. The starting salary for new hires is $15.76 an hour, the workers told me, and while it accrues with experience, there’s a cap at $25 an hour, which can only be reached after eight years. That’s what comes with being stranded on the second tier of lower-wage workers, which has affected all new hires since 2009, when the union agreed to a deal saving the auto companies from bankruptcy.

Carmakers and the United Auto Workers are talking. No signs of a breakthrough to end the strike

Before the ink had dried on the union’s agreements with GM, Ford and Stellantis (the owner of Chrysler and Jeep), Fain announced that his next targets would be the foreign automakers that had set up their shops in anti-labor states to keep unions from their doors. Winning a record agreement at Aramark is part of the UAW’s strategy to put pressure on the other nine sanitation companies to negotiate similar contracts, improving conditions for all UAW sanitation workers. General Motors Aramark workers have won a historic tentative agreement that will set the pattern and raise the standard for all UAW GM members in sanitation.

Los Angeles Police Department issued a citywide tactical alert due to a protest on USC's campus, urging people to avoid the area. "We absolutely condemn the antisemitism language that we've heard of late, and we certainly condemn all the hate speech and the threats of violence out there. These protests, we understand they're important, but they do need to be peaceful," he said. Last week, the University of California rejected calls to divest from companies that do business with Israel. Addressing the physical altercations during the protests, Osako said, "We are dismayed that certain individuals instead chose to jeopardize the physical safety of the community." "As an institution of higher education, we stand firmly for the idea that even when we disagree, we must still engage respectfully and recognize one another’s humanity," Osako continued. "We have since instituted additional security measures and increased the numbers of our safety team members on site," Osako said.

On Saturday, Stellantis and the union traded public barbs over the closing of the company’s assembly plant in Belvedere, Illinois. Jeffries echoed comments from President Joe Biden that "there have been record profits that should result in a record contract." Jeffries added "nothing less than that is acceptable." House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries stood with striking UAW workers on Sunday afternoon in Wayne, Michigan, where Ford has two assembly plants.

After a short standoff, the truck reversed and pulled up the road toward another entrance. But just to be sure, a few members piled into a van and took off toward that entrance. As impressive as it is, the UAW’s success record at the bargaining table is only part of the story. From our earliest days, the UAW has been a leader in the struggle to secure economic and social justice for all people. As usual, the media and politicians are blaming the possibility of an auto strike on the auto workers union, but company managements are the guilty parties.
