The landmark Chemosphere home in the Hollywood Hills and its owner, publisher Benedikt Taschen, were profiled in a 2005 Home cover story. “What was great about Lautner is that he had this dualism about nature and the city,” Taschen said at the time, noting that one side of the house was “pure nature,” with skunks, bobcats, coyotes and deer, while the other side was “pure city,” the vast San Fernando Valley.

Ignoring Lautner’s recommendation of a spare landscape dotted with pine trees, Goldstein planted a lush tropical garden, which over the years has nearly enveloped the house. He asked the architect to design built-in concrete furniture for the living room.

Working around the existing architecture was often more difficult than building something from scratch, Goldstein adds — renovations for the master bedroom alone took four years to complete. “From that project on, I never stopped,” Goldstein says of working on the house with Lautner. The duo continued to collaborate until the architect’s death 22 years later. The Sheats-Goldstein house, located a short distance from Beverly Hills, was originally built in 1963 for Paul Sheats, a university professor, and his wife Helen Sheats, an artist.

D.W. Young's documentary gets you hooked on the work of the legendary Village Voice and Harper's Bazaar photographer, whose images are a miracle of spontaneous classicism. But he’s much more concerned with building his house, and with his mystique. “Who knows what else I’ll come up with,” says Goldstein, whose estimated $40 million bequest features a $17 million endowment for maintenance and programming for visitors and scholars.
It's impossible to imagine the Sheats-Goldstein ever belonged to anyone but a model-loving, courtside Lakers fixture who owns trailer parks and dresses like Dr. Teeth from the Muppets, but in fact Goldstein is the house's second owner. The house’s astonishing James Turrell Skyspace installation came about after Goldstein admired other Turrell works he saw in museums and private homes. Through Ace Gallery in L.A., Goldstein arranged for Lautner and Turrell to collaborate; and when the architect died mid-way through the process, Goldstein stepped in.
The result is a house so unique, so carefully crafted and fresh, that Goldstein wants everyone to be able to tour it and be inspired by it. The Sheats-Goldstein Residence, as the property is now known, still maintains all the original designs and touches that John Lautner carefully created.
Needless to say, Goldstein wants the good times to keep rolling at Club James even after he’s gone. Dubbed Club James, for obvious reasons, the venue was Goldstein’s idea, to keep Hollywood parties out of his house, but still close by. James Goldstein worked with the designer for years to ensure every little detail was in tune with the overall theme of ‘organic’ architecture. What emerged was a two-decades-long partnership to remodel the house, which ended when John Lautner passed away in 1994. However, Goldstein never stopped tweaking and upgrading his Beverly Crest dwelling, even adding a nightclub to the list of amenities.
